BuzzFeed Called Out for More Fake News About Trump

A headline about the FBI investigating wire transfers implied the Russians were paying the Trump campaign. The Washington Post called them out on the claim.

A BuzzFeed headline on Tuesday seemed to declare what millions of liberals had hoped, that the Trump campaign had accepted Russian financial help to win the 2016 election. “Secret Finding: 60 Russian Payments ‘To Finance Election Campaign of 2016,’” the headline told users.

According to the report, the FBI was looking into payments to Russian embassies around the world, one of which bore the note, “to finance election campaign of 2016.”

A casual observer would assume that the Russians were referencing the 2016 U.S. presidential election, but as Philip Bump pointed out in The Washington Post, that’s most likely inaccurate.

Around two months before the presidential election, Russia held parlimentary elections, and Russians living in a foreign land would vote in an embassy.

BuzzFeed defended its framing of the article, claiming to Bump that while no one had told them that it was not related to the U.S. election, no one had told them it was for Duma elections either.

Bump wrote:

That said, the BuzzFeed story wasn’t sold to the public with the headline, “FBI investigating wire transfers.” Nor was the story sold with the predication that the “election campaign” was quite possibly not the American campaign. The possibility that it could be related to Russia’s own election is thrown out as one of several possible options.

This isn’t the first time that BuzzFeed has played fast and loose with information surrounding the Trump-Russia investigation. In January, they published the infamously unverified Trump dossier and all of its salacious allegations.
