Richards says Ben Ray Luján comments about supporting pro-life a candidate is a tactical mistake.
Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards said that Democrats who support pro-life candidates in the 2018 midterm elections lack principles, during an interview with Politico’s “Off Message.”
Politico’s Edward-Isaac Dovere asked Richards whether Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) Chair Rep. Ben Ray Luján (D-NM), who said the DCCC would support pro-life Democratic candidates in 2018, just doesn’t get it.
“I have no idea what is in his mind. I haven’t talked to him,” Richards responded. “It’s a shocking sort of misunderstanding of actually, both where the country is at which is overwhelmingly supportive of abortion rights and also who are the ground troops who fuel the election of candidates.”
Richards explains how “you can’t get elected in this country without the support of women.”
“So I think the danger of his remarks are not only sorta maybe tactically not well thought-out,” Richards concluded. “But they send a terrible message to people across the country about sort of the lack of principles that perhaps some people in the Democratic Party … stand about.”
