Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) criticized Democrats for their plan to filibuster the nomination of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court at a press conference on Wednesday.
Grassley discussed Gorsuch’s clear qualifications, and said, “It leaves me, then, stunned why there’s this talk about a filibuster.”
“It’s quite clear that if [Gorsuch] isn’t qualified then nobody is, and if you’d be filibustering a judge like this, it’s obvious that you’d filibuster anyone.”
Grassley called Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s (D-NY) machinations to block the nomination, by denying cloture, “purely politics.”
Senate Republicans have said they would invoke the so-called ‘nuclear’ option and change the rules for vote requirments
Surrounded by former clerks for Judge Gorsuch, Grassley left no doubt about Gorsuch’s personal character, pointing out that the clerks’ “fierce loyalty to the judge says a lot about the type of person that we’re going to have on the Supreme Court.”
