Chuck Schumer and Donald Trump Agree on TPP, But Schumer Attacked Him Anyway

Ever the political animal, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) attacked President Trump for issuing an executive order that pulled America out of the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) Monday afternoon. Schumer himself opposes TPP, and his problem with Trump’s executive order seems to have more to do with what he called the “fanfare” that accompanied the announcement.

“My views on trade are probably closer to President Trump’s than they were to President Obama’s or President Bush’s,” Schumer admitted. “I think our trade laws have hurt working people. I oppose NAFTA and TPP.”

Schumer went on to declare, “The Trans Pacific Partnership was dead long ago, before President Trump took office.”

Preventing TPP was a rare issue that united Donald Trump’s supporters and progressive Democrats during the 2016 election.

Progressive leaders Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Sen. Bernie Sander (I-VT) both applauded Trump’s decision.
