Clinton Blasts Sanders for Having No Plan for Single-Payer in 2016

“I spent a lot of time basically defending President Obama in a Democratic Primary. I couldn’t believe it,” Clinton said of Sanders.

Hillary Clinton blasted Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) over his single-payer health care plan during an interview on “Pod Save America,” saying during the 2016 campaign, Sanders didn’t know how to accomplish single-payer legislation.

Clinton was asked about a claim she made in her new book, “What Happened,” in which she claims Sanders prevented her from running a “feisty progressive campaign.”

“Well what I mean by that, because we certainly were trying to run that kind of a campaign, is that his claims, which he could not defend, really not even explain when pressed, filled up a lot of space,” Clinton explained. “Every time we made a claim on what we were going to do, [Sanders] would just say well okay, I’m going to do more of it. And so the argument was never adequately joined. And I spent a lot of time basically defending President Obama in a Democratic Primary. I couldn’t believe it.”

Clinton continued, “I was running against someone who publicly advocated for President Obama being primaried, right, so it was difficult to have what I considered to be a fair-minded debate … with somebody who wasn’t a Democrat, who criticized both President Obama and me, and it was much more challenging to have a straightforward argument of, ‘Okay, healthcare, what are we going to do about healthcare?’ Because he would say ‘Uh, we’re going to do single-payer.” And I would say, ‘Okay, how are we going to do it?’ And he wouldn’t know,” Clinton said. “But the claim and the laying down of the gauntlet of that made it harder.”
