Hillary Clinton says that Trump dreams of “Moscow on the Potomac” in an interview on “Pod Save America.”
Hillary Clinton said that she believes that President Trump wants to turn the United States into Russia and sprouted a conspiracy theory about how Republicans want a constitutional convention, during an interview on the podcast “Pod Save America,” that was released on Tuesday.
Clinton was asked about a passage in her new book, “What Happened,” where she says Trump wants to be like Russian President Vladimir Putin.
From “What Happened:”
“[Trump] doesn’t like Putin – he seems to want to be like Putin, a white authoritarian leader who could put down dissenters, represses minorities, disenfranchises voters, weakens the press, and amass untold billions for himself. He dreams of Moscow on the Potomac.”
Clinton was asked if Americans should take literally that Trump is someone who would crack down on free speech in the same way Putin has in Russia.
“Yes,” Clinton responded emphatically. “I wrote this book to try and come to grips with what happened. But also to sound the alarm about what I think could still and may well happen.”
Clinton continued by saying that she believed if Trump is left to his own devices, he will try to become authoritarian.
“Also remember, the right wing, aided and funded by the Mercers, Koch brothers, etc., is very serious about calling a constitutional convention. The need 34 states and the last I checked they were like at 28, 29,” Clinton said. “If you really get deep into what they are advocating: limits on the First Amendment, no limits on the Second Amendment, limits on criminal justice. There is a very insidious right wing agenda.”
“So when I say that [Trump] doesn’t just like Putin, he wants to be like Putin. I’m not saying he’s going to start killing journalists, but I am saying that he likes the idea of unaccountable, unchecked power,” Clinton said. “It’s a very clear agenda that is hard for Americans to really kind of wrap our heads around because we’ve never had to deal with anything like this before.”
