The panel on CNN’s Inside Politics highlighted the pitfalls Senate Democrats will face if they continue to oppose President Trump at every turn.
The New York Times’ Jonathan Martin said that Senate Democrats are trying to keep pace with their base, who view President Trump as dangerous and illegitimate.
“They don’t just want opposition. They want, you know, basically to stop this person in his tracks. It’s nothing like we’ve seen in this country,” Martin continued to say about Democratic voters.
CNN’s Nia-Malika Henderson said that progressives view themselves as a resistance to the Trump administration.
CNN’s Manu Raju told the panel the Democratic Party’s biggest dilemma is the 2018 midterms. “Chuck Schumer has to worry about five red-state Democrats from really red states,” Raju said.
Raju went on to say about those Senate Democrats in red states who are up for re-election in 2018: “Those senators need Trump supporters to help them win re-election. And Chuck Schumer needs those five senators to win the re-election in order to even have a chance to get the majority, or to keep the margin the way it is.”
