Reporters said that foreign policy experts have largely welcomed Trump’s moves on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
CNN’s John King and Yahoo! News‘ Olivier Knox said on CNN on Monday that foreign policy experts have praised President Trump’s flexibility on the status of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
“The ambassadors in Foggy Bottom roll their eyes and they even mock the president, when he says, ‘one state, two states, I want what the parties want,'” King said.
“But there are some people who actually think a guy who’s not so bogged down in the details, but who does broad parameters of a deal, that maybe that’s the circuit breaker this needs,” King added.
Knox went even further, “there are a lot of foreign policy people and national security people who think that bringing the two-state solution down to one of the options was a good move.”
The virtual collapse of the Palestinian government has complicated any efforts to pursue a two-state solution, according to Knox.
“The premises of the two-state solution now are not workable,” Knox said.
Given the rapidly changing circumstances in the Middle East, then, Trump’s lack of concrete ideological attachments in the peace process might work in everyone’s favor.
