Contrary to the Obama administration’s claims the United States has not killed 75 percent of ISIS fighters, according to counterterrorism expert Daveed Gartenstein-Ross. “The U.S. intelligence estimates in my judgment have always been low,” Gartenstein-Ross said in an appearance on CNN’s New Day on Thursday morning.
Gartenstein-Ross pointed out discrepancies in U.S. intelligence estimates: “If you look at the number now, 50,000 being killed, which I think is roughly accurate, that would mean that they had destroyed ISIS’ forces basically two times over.” Instead, Gartenstein-Ross took issue with previous intelligence estimates that ISIS had between 18,000 and 33,000 fighters, saying the number was in fact much higher.
Gartenstein-Ross argued that if the United States had achieved the sort of attrition that U.S. intelligence has claimed ISIS “would be collapsing much more quickly than they are.”
