Rep. Ron Kind (D-WI) warned at a tax reform bill markup on Wednesday that the passage of the GOP tax reform plan would lead to religious conflict in the country because it would politicize churches.

Speaking on a possible weakening of the Johnson amendment, which prevents churches from endorsing political candidates, Kind said that such a move could initiate “a tearing of the very fabric of our communities.”

The representative expressed fear that politics would infect the sermons of pastors around the country.

“Repealing the Johnson amendment will politicize the pulpit. It will create civil war in the pews,” Kind warned. “We are self-segregating way too much already.”

“You politicize the pulpit, it’s going to make the Sunni-Shia conflict in the Middle East look like a picnic,” he said. “There’s going to be conflict in the streets overnight.”
