CNN called out Ed Markey for using explosive language but not being able to back it up.
Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) said that the United States was “careening toward a constitutional crisis” after President Trump’s firing of FBI Director James Comey in an interview with CNN on Wednesday.
After making the claim, host Poppy Harlow asked him to back up the claim: “A constitutional crisis, that is explosive language. What specifically are you pointing to, Senator?”
Markey struggled to find solid ground for his answer, alleging that the Russian influence campaign during the 2016 presidential campaign provided backup for his claim.
John Berman asked Markey if he was suggesting that Trump violated the Constitution with his firing of Comey. “You said ‘constitutional crisis’ – is he in violation of the Constitution?” Berman asked.
Markey offered no answer on the constitutionality of Trump’s move.
