Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), in an appearance on CNN’s New Day Wednesday morning, said of President Trump’s nomination of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, “We cannot have a Supreme Court that is delivering politically conservative outcomes.”
Whitehouse would later refuse to deny that Trump selected a qualified nominee, saying that was not the focus of Democratic concerns.
“I think the point now is not so much that this guy is or isn’t qualified, the point right now is that we’ve got to make sure we try to protect the court from becoming the political delivery system the 5 Republicans have made it,” Whitehouse said.
The Rhode Island Senator’s comments suggested that Democratic opposition to Gorsuch’s nomination would be based in petty political fights, rather than protecting the integrity of the court.
Whitehouse is a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and will participate in Gorsuch’s nomination hearing.
