A Democrat challenger in a Minnesota congressional district claimed Sen. John McCain, an American war hero, only showed “courage” in the Senate after being diagnosed with brain cancer.

The Democrat, Dean Phillips, made the claim speaking to a group in Minnesota. Phillips is hoping to challenge Republican Erik Paulsen (R-MN) in Minnesota’s Third Congressional District next year.

“I’ve been tweeting on occasion about saluting Bob Corker and John McCain and Jeff Flake – men who have shown a little bit of courage speaking truth to their own party,” Phillips said. “But it shouldn’t take brain cancer and the retirement from the Senate to do so.”

A reminder for readers: while Phillips inherited a vodka distillery and bought an ice cream company with his father’s money, McCain spent over 20 years in the U.S. Navy and was a prisoner of war in Vietnam for five-and-a-half years.

Phillips, who apologized to McCain in a Washington Examiner piece, ought to think twice before questioning the courage of an American hero who has dedicated his entire life to public service.
