Seth Moulton, one of Nancy Pelosi’s chief critics in the House, is adopting the president’s language in an effort to oust her from leadership…
Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA) wants Nancy Pelosi gone. She’s an “amazing politican,” he concedes, but he argues the 77 year-old is not “the right thing right now for the party.”
But in discussing his ambition – including a potential presidential run – Moulton has adopted the same talking points as the man he wants to defeat: Donald Trump (emphasis ours).
“What we’ve got to do – not just for our party, but I think for so many American people – is start winning again,” he continued. “Start bringing some balance back to Washington and start winning with leadership that the American people can trust – not the old, tired Democratic partisan leadership – but really a new generation of leaders who are going to put the country first.”
Moulton’s feud with Pelosi reached an embarrassing apex last month when the California congresswoman leaked a letter Moulton had written to her in 2016 thanking her profusely for his committee assignments and explaining he “wouldn’t be able to do the job as well without [Pelosi’s] help.”
Still, his remarks about Pelosi’s failed leadership are nothing new. Elected first in 2014, Moulton began calling for new leadership after his party’s devastating defeats in November 2016.
According to Politico, the impetus for that call for change could have been a phone call from his political adviser:
“You should run for president in 2020,” Scott Ferson told the 38-year-old, second-term congressman from the North Shore of Massachusetts—one of the least liberal areas of the famously liberal state.
“That’s ridiculous,” Moulton said.
Ridiculous? “Donald Trump was just elected president,” Ferson said.
“Fair point,” Moulton said.
Moulton’s Politico profile included descriptions from friends who described him as “a young John F. Kennedy,” and “very close” to but actually “farther along” than JFK.
“Unless there’s some very unexpected turn in the road, yes, he’s going to run for president,” one friend said.
