Democrats Are ‘Lukewarm’ About Endorsing Nancy Pelosi

Democratic House candidates running in 2018 don't seem to eager to support the House Minority Leader.

Democrats running for Congress across the country seem less than enthusiastic to support House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). Some Texas Democrats have even gone as far to suggest they would not welcome support from Pelosi.

Roll Call reported:

“In Texas’ 23rd District, all four Democrats running against Republican Rep. Will Hurd were at best lukewarm in their enthusiasm for a potential endorsement from House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi — with some suggesting they would not welcome the California Democrat’s help.”

Democrat Jay Hulings went as far as to tell the Texas Tribune that he thinks its time for new leadership inside the Democratic Party. Hulings is a former federal prosecutor and currently has, “the biggest war chest in the district.”

“It’s been a long time, and I’ve got a lot of respect for the work that she’s done — she’s been very effective — but I think the time is right for a new face in the House representing us Democrats,” Hulings told the Tribune.

This isn’t the first time that Democrats running for Congress have avoided endorsing Pelosi.

In August, McClatchy surveyed 20 Democratic House candidates and found only one who said he or she would support Pelosi while 18 declined to comment on the subject.

McClatchy reported:

“In a survey of 20 Democratic House candidates, only one – a former Senate staffer from Orange County, California – would state support for the congresswoman staying on as leader of the House Democratic Caucus. Of the rest, 18 declined to say if Pelosi should keep her job, while one, a political newcomer from a culturally conservative Ohio district, said he would vote for someone other than Pelosi.”

Democrat’s wariness to support Pelosi might be due in part to how successful Republicans were able to tie Georgia Democrat Jon Ossoff to Pelosi, which eventually sunk Ossoff’s congressional bid.
