Making matters worse are a series of potentially bruising primary fights that could ensnare Democrats and make it more difficult to win general elections next November.

CNN profiled the top Democratic primary races:

1. California senate: Feinstein vs. de León vs. the field

2. Illinois governor: J.B. Pritzker and Chris Kennedy

3. Iowa governor: Andy McGuire, John Norris and Cathy Glasson

4. Illinois-03: Dan Lipinski and Marie Newman

5. Oklahoma governor: Connie Johnson, Drew Edmondson, and Scott Inman

6. New York governor: Andrew Cuomo, Stephanie Miner, Terry Gipson, and Cynthia Nixon

7. Rhode Island lieutenant governor: Dan McKee and Aaron Regunberg

8. Maryland governor: Ben Jealous, Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, and Rushern Baker

9. Florida-07: Stephanie Murphy and Chardo Richardson

If more than a few of these names sound unfamiliar, that’s because many of these candidates are not well-known. The fact that lesser-known challengers are willing to take on incumbent Democrats speaks volumes about the divisive nature of the party.
