Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) is urging Republicans to include a repeal of Obamacare’s individual mandate in the tax cut package that the Senate and House are due to debate and vote on in the coming months.

In a Sunday afternoon tweetstorm, Cotton argued for repeal of the mandate, earning hundreds of retweets:

Boiled down, Cotton’s arguments were:

  • Repeal saves $300 billion over 10 years, helping pay for tax cuts
  • The individual mandate is unpopular
  • Repeal doesn’t take any money away from Obamacare, “[j]ust stops [the] IRS from fining people!”

The current fee for not obtaining health insurance – short of some exemptions – is the larger of either 2.5 percent of a person’s household income or $695 per adult in the household.

This penalty makes the individual mandate one of the least popular elements of Obamacare. In a February 2017 YouGov/Economist poll, the individual mandate had the least support (34 percent) of several Obamacare-like elements the pollster asked Americans about.

While some elements, like protecting people with pre-existing conditions, had popular support in a subsequent CNN/ORC poll (March 2017), 48 percent favored ridding Obamacare of its individual mandate.
