GOP Senators to McConnell: Keep Senate Open 24/7 to Advance Trump Agenda

Nine GOP senators wrote to Mitch McConnell, telling him the U.S. Senate should be open around the clock until the president's agenda is passed.

Nine GOP senators – almost 20 percent of the caucus – are telling Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell that he needs to keep the Senate open “24/7” to pass President Trump’s agenda.

Axios shared the full letter on Thursday morning. Here’s part of it (emphasis ours):

The 115th Congress is being disrupted by sustained, partisan obstruction. We believe our conference must be willing to change how the Senate operates both by tradition and by rule.

We appreciate your acknowledging our concerns and applaud your plan to work nights and weekends when necessary to overcome this gridlock. You have our full support to turn the Senate on full time, 24/7, to advance the president’s agenda, including a meaningful health care solution, bold changes to our tax code, and funding the government by year’s end.

Signatories include conservatives like Sens. Joni Ernst (R-IA), John Kennedy (R-LA), and Luther Strange (R-AL), and one more moderate senator up for re-election in 2018: Dean Heller (R-NV).

President Trump may like the move, given he has consistently called for the Senate to ditch the filibuster rule to move his agenda forward.
