“Those players aren’t protesting the national anthem or the flag,” Clinton said on Monday.
Hillary Clinton expressed support for NFL players who kneel during the national anthem, arguing that they are protesting racism and injustice and not the flag. She made the remarks during an event at the University of California, Davis, on Monday.
The event was part of Clinton’s book tour for “What Happened,” and Clinton was discussing Russian interference in the 2016 election when she made the remarks regarding the NFL players.
“Just a couple of weeks ago, accounts with suspected links to Russia flooded Twitter with posts about NFL players’ peaceful protests,” Clinton explained. “The Russians posted on both sides of the debate using hashtags like #StandForOurAnthem or #TakeAKnee to inflame passions and stir up disagreements.”
“Let’s be clear, those players aren’t protesting the national anthem or the flag. They’re protesting racism and injustice, and they have every right to do so,” Clinton said.
