House Democrat Claims Criticism of Pelosi is ‘Sexist’

The chair of the House Democratic Caucus also didn’t deny that he was gunning for the minority leader’s job.

Rep. Joe Crowley (D-NY), the chair of the House Democratic Caucus, said that criticism of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was “sexist” in an appearance on MSNBC on Thursday.

“I have heard that argument [that Pelosi is dragging Democrats down] used so many times before, and I think it really reflects the sexism that still exists in politics today,” Crowley said.

“The vilification of her, in a very sexist way, quite frankly is what’s led to this discussion,” he added.

What prompted the discussion regarding Pelosi were comments from Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-CA), a member of House Democratic leadership, who called for Pelosi’s removal.

Crowley called Pelosi “one of the smartest, hardest working members” of the Democratic Party.

Asked if he would eventually want to take over leadership from Pelosi, Crowley did not hide his desires.

“Look, I’ve never shied away from my ambition some day to advance in the House Leadership,” the New York representative said, only offering that such a future decision would be up to the Democratic caucus.
