How Many Democrats Are Running for President?

Three prominent Democrats are speaking at an Iowa Democratic event on Friday night.

When CNN’s Chris Cillizza listed 22 Democrats who were considering a presidential bid in 2020, it appeared that the Democrats were emptying the bench for the next presidential election.

But if early trips to Iowa are any indication of presidential ambitions, Democrats might have 3 more candidates to add to their list. Failed Missouri Senate candidate Jason Kander and Reps. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) and Elijah Cummings (D-MD) are traveling to Iowa to speak at the Iowa Democratic Wing Ding Dinner.

Kander lost in 2016 to Sen. Roy Blunt (R-MO) in a close race, but the failed candidate has tried to make a name for himself on the national stage in recent months.

A member of the House Intelligence Committee and the high-profile House investigation into Russian interference during the 2016 election, Swalwell has appeared all over television to discuss what has become the pre-eminent issue facing the Trump administration.

Cummings is an older member of the Democratic caucus, but has also been raising his profile during President Trump’s first seven months in office.

Hillary Clinton flubbed a “joke” at the 2015 Wing Ding dinner when she said that she loved the app “Snapchat” because “those messages disappear all by themselves.” The comment came in the wake of revelations about her email scandal.
