How Many Seasons Will It Take for Amazon to Ruin Lord of the Rings?

The streaming service is planning a multi-season adaptation of the famous J.R.R. Tolkein fantasy novels. Hopefully, they won't spoil one of the greatest movie trilogies of all time.

Orcs, Ents, Elves, and the One Ring are coming to Amazon in the form of a multi-season series, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter. While details so far are sparse, the streaming service confirmed Monday that they had secured the rights to produce an adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkein’s fantasy series, “The Lord of the Rings.”

The report indicated that the series would not be a recreation of the hugely successful 2000s movie trilogy of the story. Instead the seasons would “explore new storylines” not necessarily mentioned in the epic fantasy books:

Amazon’s LOTR series will be set in Middle Earth and explore new storylines preceding Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring. The deal includes a potential additional spinoff series.

Based on that framing, the series could include potential storylines that occurred in the roughly sixty years between “The Hobbit” and “The Fellowship of the Ring,” events surrounding the War of the Last Alliance (referenced in the first film), or “The Silmarillion,” a posthumous work of Tolkien’s.

The Peter Jackson-directed movie franchise of the 2000s earned billions of dollars worldwide, and its finale, “The Return of the King,” tied the record for Academy Award wins with eleven.

If Amazon hopes to live up to the awe-inspiring legacy of “The Lord of the Rings,” they will have a lot of work to do.
