South Korea says its northern neighbor is making preparations for another nuclear test. Will this heighten tensions between North Korea and the U.S.?
North Korea is making preparations for its sixth nuclear test, according to South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS).
CNN reported on Monday morning that the NIS “has detected signs of North Korea preparing for another nuclear test at its Punggye-ri underground test site.”
Speculation of when North Korea would conduct another nuclear test has been rife this year, with it being pegged to various days important in North Korean history.
North Korea’s last nuclear test came in September, when it detonated what it claimed was a miniaturized nuclear warhead small enough to be mounted on a missile, though analysts say the claim is nearly impossible to verify.
A recent story from the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the state-run media arm of the Kim regime, blasted South Korean “warmongers” in a Monday statement, according to the watchdog KCNA Watch website.
South Korean warmongers incited war hysteria on the five islands in the hotspot waters of the West Sea of Korea on August 22 and 23, according to Yonhap News of south Korea.
The south Korean puppet navy mobilized various warships to get busy with a transport drill with the maritime police.
KCNA also kept up its rhetoric against the U.S. this weekend, as the U.S. and South Korea conduct annual joint military drills this week.
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is still seeking diplomatic options, saying on Sunday that the U.S. is “going to continue our peaceful pressure campaign as I have described it, working with allies, working with China as well to see if we can bring the regime in Pyongyang to the negotiating table.”
