The former Director of National Intelligence said that the federal government’s institutions were under attack both internally and externally.
Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Sunday that American institutions were “under assault” from President Trump.
“Our institutions are under assault, both externally, I think, as well, our institutions are under assault internally,” Clapper said, referencing Russian interference in the 2016 election.
“Internally from the president?” Tapper asked.
“Exactly,” Clapper responded.
Clapper explained that Trump was placing the American system of checks-and-balances “under assault.”
The former DNI also called Trump’s firing of FBI Director James Comey “very disturbing.”
Trump has often cited Clapper as saying that there was no evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian intelligence.
