White House Chief of Staff John Kelly joked in a Fox News interview on Monday that liberals want to replace American historical monuments with monuments of pop artist Andy Warhol.

Asked about efforts to take down statues of George Washington and Robert E. Lee, Kelly expressed wariness, arguing it was an attempt to erase history.

“There are certain things in history that were not so good and other things that are very, very good,” Kelly said.

“I think we make a mistake, though, as a society and certainly as individuals when we take what is today accepted as right and wrong and go back 100, 200, 300 years or more and say what those, you know, what Christopher Columbus did was wrong,” he continued. “It’s inconceivable to me that you would take what we think now and apply it back then.”

The chief of staff called efforts at historical revisionism dangerous before explaining his perspective on the American Civil War.

Host Laura Ingraham asked Kelly with whom they would replace Washington?

“We can find some cult hero that we can put up there and say he really was the great one – Andy Warhol or someone like that,” Kelly responded, chuckling.

Warhol was an eccentric artist known for his highly stylized paintings, photographs and films.
