Podesta told Politico’s Susan Glasser the campaign thought they did enough to weather the storm.
John Podesta, chairman for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign, conducted an interview with Politico‘s Susan Glasser and still blamed ex-FBI Director James Comey for Clinton’s election loss.
Glasser asked Podesta whether he agrees with Clinton’s recent assessment that Comey’s intervention in the 2016 election was a significant reason for her defeat.
“Oh, yes. Absolutely.” Podesta told Glasser.
Podesta continued: “Look, we bear responsibility, and it’s a great burden, and I feel it every day. I mean, we lost this election. We won the popular vote by three million votes, but we lost the Electoral College and we lost the election to Donald Trump.”
“I think [Comey] was a significant factor,” Podesta said. “We felt like we had a lead that we took away from the three debates, in which I believe that Hillary won all those debates.”
Glasser followed up by asking Podesta whether the campaign knew at the time that this was going to be such an important factor.
“You know, we felt like things – we were – you know, we had kind of weathered this incident, but it wasn’t to be. We lost enough votes in the right places to give him the Electoral College victory,” Podesta told Glasser.
