Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) may want to be president in 2021. Has she decided that shutting down the government is one way to make it to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue?

Harris, Politico reported on Wednesday, is mulling pushing for a shutdown if Republicans and Democrats don’t include protections for some young, undocumented immigrants known as DREAMers in the year-end spending bill.

Senate Democrats are weighing whether to use their ultimate leverage — the threat of a government shutdown in December — in their bid to protect hundreds of thousands of so-called Dreamers from possible deportation.

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), a prospective 2020 presidential hopeful, raised the specter of a year-end showdown last week when she declared she wouldn’t vote for a spending bill that doesn’t help children of undocumented immigrants who came to the country as minors. Republicans will need Democratic votes — definitely in the Senate and almost certainly in the House, too — to pass legislation to keep the government funded.

Harris has not been short on 2020 stunts this year, endorsing Bernie Sanders’ radical single-payer health care plan and hob-knobbing with liberal elites in the Hamptons at the end of the summer.

A threat to shut down the government is new, though.

It will be interesting to see if Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) joins Harris’ push, given he told ABC’s “This Week” that Democrats shutting down the government over immigration would be “governmental chaos.”

Harris may have an ally in fellow Californian Nancy Pelosi, though. She indicated in October that House Democrats will “use every possibility” to strike a deal for DREAMers, not ruling out a government shutdown.
