Jonathan Turley told MSNBC that the New York Times report is “pretty thin soup” for an impeachment proceeding.
Professor of law at the George Washington University, Jonathan Turley, told the panel on MSNBC’s Morning Joe that he doesn’t believe that The New York Times‘ report regarding former FBI Director James Comey’s memo amounts to obstruction of justice on Wednesday.
MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough asked Turley about the Times article, which claims President Trump asked FBI Director Comey to stop the FBI investigation into national security advisor Michael Flynn. Specifically, Scarborough asked whether this constituted obstruction of justice.
“You know, this isn’t going to be real popular, but I don’t think so,” Turley told Scarborough. “The fact is, I don’t think this makes out an obstruction case. There’s a couple of reasons why.”
Turley told Scarborough that President Trump had ample reason to fire former acting Attorney General Sally Yates
“More importantly, obstruction of justice requires you act to obstruct or interfere usually with a judicial or congressional proceeding, neither of which was pending at this time,” Turley said. He added that what this New York Times report alleges doesn’t meet the legal redefinition of obstruction.
“Now, does that mean this can’t be obstruction? Of course not,” Turley said.
“This is pretty thin soup for either a criminal or impeachment proceeding,” Turley concluded.
