While Graham thought Trump's trip was a success he was critical of the President's proposed budget, saying destroying America's soft power does not make America safer.

The South Carolina Senator was critical of President Trump’s proposed budget, saying that destroying soft power does not make America safer.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) praised President Trump’s first foreign trip during an interview on CNN’s State of the Union but was critical of the President’s proposed budget.

CNN’s Dana Bash asked Graham what he thought about Trump’s first foreign trip, and his claims that beefing up the American military should be the top priority to ensure American security.

“Well, it should be,” Graham said. “I support the arm sells to Saudi Arabia. We need to beef up our ally’s ability to help us in the War or Terror. I thought it was overall a good trip, reassured Isreal, a good message to Saudi Arabia.”

Graham agreed with Trump that NATO members should pay their fair share, but argued that doing so “is probably the wrong venue at the 9/11 memorial.”

“But soft power was your question,” Graham added. “[A] twentry-nine percent reduction of State Department funding – that takes soft power off the table. All the things we’ve done in Africa to eradicate AIDS is compromiseded, our ability to help partners like Jordan, frontline states like the Ukraine and the Baltic nations have really been severely limited. So, destroying soft power does not make us safer. That’s what his budget does.”
