The lawyer representing former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort told reporters that charges filed against Manafort proved that Special Counsel Robert Mueller could not find any evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.

“President Donald Trump was correct. There is no evidence that Mr. Manafort or the Trump campaign colluded with the Russian government,” attorney Kevin Browning said outside the D.C. courthouse.

Browning pointed out that Manafort had represented pro-European Union forces in Ukraine, in opposition to Russia’s interests.

“[Manafort] was seeking to further democracy and to help the Ukraine come closer to the United States and the EU,” he added. “Those activities ended in 2014.”

The attorney also defended Manafort’s use of offshore funds, claiming he used them to bring Ukrainian funds into the United States.

Manafort worked for Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, widely seen as a pro-Kremlin politician and ousted during the Euromaidan in 2014, during his time in the country.
