The West Virginia Democrat criticized Clinton’s comments regarding coal miners during the 2016 election.
Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), while describing Hillary and Bill Clinton as “friends,” called the 2016 Democratic presidential candidate’s comments about coal miners “horrific.”
Manchin’s comments were the latest in a series by Democrats throwing Clinton under the bus in the wake of an interview in which she attempted to absolve herself of responsibility in the 2016 election.
Manchin first offered praise of the Democratic power couple: “We’ve had a good communication. They’ve always been there to help me. They’ve been in my state campaigning.”
Clinton had said during a town hall in the 2016 election, “We’re going to put a lot of coal miners out of business.” The comment soon went viral, casting the candidate as out-of-touch with working people’s concerns.
Manchin qualified his statement, saying he sympathized with the sentiment behind Clinton’s statement.
Manchin is up for re-election in 2018 in a state President Trump won by 42 points.
