The national security advisor backed up the president’s claim that the Obama-negotiated accord gives Tehran too much room.
National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster told Fox News’ Chris Wallace on Sunday that the Obama administration’s Iran deal is “the worst deal,” echoing President Trump’s previous statements.
“[The deal] is underenforced now. We know Iran has already violated parts of the agreement,” McMaster said.
Wallace pushed back, saying that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) affirmed Iran’s compliance.
“The IAEA has identified, and we have identified, some of these breaches that Iran has now corrected,” McMaster responded. “But what does that tell you about Iranian behavior?”
“They’re not just walking up to the line on the agreement, they’re crossing the line at times,” he said. “So there has to be much more rigorous enforcement of the deal, and we have to recognize the fundamental flaws in this deal. As the president said, it is the worst deal.”
McMaster pointed out that Iran has used the breathing room in the deal to destabilize the political situation across the Middle East and advance its own interests.
