The national security advisor said that President Trump will advance American interests during his first trip abroad.
National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster said that President Trump’s foreign trip will advance American national security and economic interests in an interview with George Stephanopolous on Sunday.
McMaster said the first goal of the trip is “to advance the security of the American people.”
Trump would address “the problem of transnational terrorist organizations” in the region, imploring Muslim allies to cooperate in addressing the problem. In addition to advocating action against terrorism, Trump will propose action taken against Iran’s expansionist tendencies, according to McMaster.
“The second part of it is economic cooperation, being able to get better access to markets, develop trade relationships to create American jobs,” he added.
Trump has made clear that his main priority is “jobs, jobs, jobs,” and McMaster’s comments indicate that concern will be on the president’s mind in the Middle East.
Finally, McMaster said that Trump would emphasize defense “burden-sharing” as he has done with NATO allies.
