Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) drew a challenger this week in the form of El Paso Congressman Beto O’Rourke. Formerly an El Paso city councilman, O’Rourke was first elected to Congress in 2012.

Here are five quick facts about O’Rourke:

CLINTON BACKER: O’Rourke endorsed Hillary Clinton in June 2016 and served as a superdelegate for her at the DNC Convention; “I am supporting Hillary Clinton because she represents the best opportunity for experienced leadership in the world’s most important job,” O’Rourke said at the time.

PRO-EPA REGULATIONS: O’Rourke voted against limiting EPA regulations, which end up costing energy consumers more; the 2014 vote would have nullified EPA’s regulation of new electricity-generating power plants.

IMMIGRATION: O’Rourke voted against a bill that would have prohibited President Obama from exempting or deferring any illegal immigrants in 2014.

CRIMINAL CHARGES: O’Rourke was charged with burglary and DWI in 1995 and 1998 respectively; both charges were eventually dismissed or dropped.

LEGALIZE: O’Rouke supports marijuana legalization and called for a “re-examination of the drug war,” and even authored a book on the topic.
