MSNBC calls out Democratic Senator for Spreading Fake News

Sen. Murphy falsely claimed Democrats didn’t use reconciliation to pass Obamacare.

MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough called out Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) on Wednesday for falsely claiming that Democrats didn’t use reconciliation to pass Obamacare during an interview on “Morning Joe.”

NBC’s Willie Geist asked Murphy what areas of Obamacare he thought could be improved and where he thought Democrats could work with Republicans to fix these issues.

“Well, let’s just go back for a second. This is a wonderful claim that Mitch McConnell makes that Democrats haven’t been willing to work with him,” Murphy began. “Remember, they moved to reconciliation, which is the process by which you pass this with only Republican votes, the day after they were sworn in.”

Scarborough pointed out to Murphy that Democrats used reconciliation to pass Obamacare in 2010.

Murphy seemed to be taken aback by Scarborough’s comment.

“No, that was passed with 60 votes in the Senate. So reconciliation was not used for healthcare in 2009. It was all Democrats, but it wasn’t reconciliation,” Murphy responded to Scarborough. Scarborough seemed to want to interject but let Murphy finish his answer.

After the interview with Murphy had concluded, Scarborough went back to Murphy’s claim about Democrats in 2009.

Scarborough read from a Washington Post article, which stated:

“To pass the Obamacare repeal bill, Republican lawmakers used the complex budget procedure known as reconciliation to avoid a filibuster in this case — the same procedure Democrats used to pass the bill in 2009 when they held both the House and the Senate.”
