A new poll shows that just 19 percent of Americans view House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi positively and a similarly abysmal 17 percent view her Senate counterparter, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, positively.
MSNBC’s Morning Joe discussed the recent NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, that arguably shows the Democratic party in crisis despite claims to the contrary from party leaders.
On a generic ballot, the Democratic Party trails the Republican Party by 5 points.
“Those are shocking numbers to me,” MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough said of the poll.
Scarborough went on to say, “All I’m saying is politically, when Donald Trump walks into the chamber tonight, he will know that even if he is the lowest rated president at this stage in modern history, he is still the most popular man standing in that room.”
“There’s reason to believe in these numbers that you see – people have a more optimistic view about the direction of the country and the future, and if [Trump] can deliver that three years from now, we may be looking at a two-term president,” he added.
Scarborough asked Mika Brzezinski if she was surprised by these numbers.
“No, no, I’m not. The Democrats are in complete disarray,” Brzezinski said. “I think what we saw, even over the weekend with the DNC chair, is a sign of a lot of work that needs to be done. It’s not that it can’t be done. But we lost and we lost badly and we have a lot of extremes we need to pull together.”
Scarborough went on to say that he was “surprised” with the amount of work that lays ahead for Democrats to rebuild the party.
“There brand is in crisis,” panelist Mark Halperin concluded.
