In an interview with NBC-Hampton Roads, Lieutenant Governor Ralph Northam (D-VA), the Democrats’ candidate in the 2017 gubernatorial race, defended an ad from the Latino Victory Fund that depicted a supporter of GOP candidate Ed Gillespie running down minority children in a pickup truck.

Asked about the ad, Northam declined to condemn the message, instead defending the decision to run it.

“[Gillespie] has run a campaign of negativity, of divineness – his MS-13 ads,” he said in reference to ads about a violent gang. “And it’s been very offensive to a lot of communities in Virginia. So these communities have responded, and that’s their right.”

The NBC reporter pushed Northam to condemn the attack, and the lieutenant governor dodged.

“That commercial did not come from our campaign. It’s certainly not a commercial that I would have wanted to run,” he added.

Northam’s campaign reported the ad buy as an in-kind contribution, meaning they approved the ad buy:
