Pence Casts First Ever Tie-Breaker in Confirmation Vote

Faced with a 50-50 tie on the confirmation of Betsy DeVos, the Vice President cast his vote in the affirmative.  DeVos will now serve as Secretary of Education.

Vice President Mike Pence cast the first-ever tie-breaker in a Senate Cabinet confirmation vote for the new Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos Tuesday.

Faced with a 50-50 tie, Pence took his seat as President of the Senate for the first time and declared, “The Senate being equally divided, the Vice President votes in the affirmative and the nomination is confirmed.”

DeVos will now serve the United States as the head of the Department of Education, ending the fiercest confirmation battle of Trump’s nominees to date.
