Perez Boots Longtime Members as DNC Chaos Continues

After sustaining criticism for his inability to fundraise, Tom Perez is cleaning house, and many Bernie Bros are on the chopping block.

Tom Perez has had a rough eight months or so as chairman of the Democratic National Committee (DNC). He’s endured widespread criticism for the DNC’s poor fundraising and lack of a cohesive message.

But NBC News reported Wednesday that Perez might be starting to fight back. The former labor secretary is putting quite a few longtime DNC officials out of work. And at least a few of those booted officials think the lingering bitterness from the 2016 Democratic primary has something to do with it:

Complaints began immediately after party officials saw a list of Perez’ appointments to DNC committees and his roster of 75 “at-large” members, who are chosen by the chair.

The removal and demotion of a handful of veteran operatives stood out, as did what critics charge is the over-representation of Clinton-backed members on the Rules and Bylaws Committee, which helps set the terms for the party’s presidential primary, though other Sanders and Ellison backers remain represented.

Is it “retaliation” for opposing Perez’s chairman ship, as the progressive wing of the party told NBC News? The DNC denies it, but among those booted from their posts were James Zogby, a prominent Bernie Sanders backer in 2016; Alice Germond, a “vocal” Keith Ellison backer for the chairmanship; and Barbra Casbar Siperstein, who supported Ellison as well.

Ray Buckley, the New Hampshire Democratic chairman, ran against Perez for the DNC chairmanship and was also kicked out. He called Perez’s move “very disappointing.”
