“Petty,” “Just Plain Wrong”: What 5 Dems Now Calling for a Shutdown Said About the 2013 Shutdown

This week, 25 House Democrats – more than one in every eight – signed on to an op-ed in The Hill vowing to oppose any spending bill that doesn’t include protections for young, undocumented immigrants known as DREAMers. This week, 25 House Democrats – more than one in every eight – signed on to an op-ed in The Hill vowing to oppose any spending bill that doesn’t include protections for young, undocumented immigrants known as DREAMers.

The op-ed, led by Reps. Luis Gutiérrez (D-IL), Raul Grijalva (D-AZ) and Adriano Espaillat (D-NY), states:

The choice is for the Speaker to make. As a group, we are actively whipping among our colleagues to create a critical mass of Democratic votes that will not support a funding package that fails to include a clean DREAM Act. We are confident that Democrats from our Leadership to the rank-and-file – and even some Republicans – will stand with us when we get to December.

Translation: 25 Democrats are ready to shut down the government if the December spending package doesn’t include the DREAM Act.

However, many of these Democrats sang a different tune on the 2013 shutdown, led by House Republicans and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) over Obamacare. Here’s a small sample, of just five of these 25 Democrats.

REP. RAUL GRIJALVA (D-AZ)

Grijalva stressed the impact of the 2013 shutdown on economic growth.

REP. MARK POCAN (D-WI)

Pocan drew a line from the “potential” 2013 shutdown (in September) to “Tea Party extremism.”

REP. STEVE COHEN (D-TN)

“Republicans being reckless&irresponsible in shutdown fight.”

REP. SHEILA JACKSON LEE (D-TX)

Jackson Lee said the GOP shutdown was “just plain wrong.”

REP. KEITH ELLISON (D-MN)

Ellison, now a DNC vice chair, tweeted plenty about the 2013 shutdown. In one choice tweet, he called it a “petty” move that hurts families.
