PIZZA WARS: Unlike Papa John’s, Pizza Hut Claims NFL Hasn’t Hurt Business

Are Americans buying less pizza because fewer people are watching NFL games? That’s the claim of Papa John’s CEO and founder John Schnatter. Papa John’s is the official pizza company of the NFL, who has seen a drop in viewership from 2016, which was also a down year for viewership.

“The NFL has hurt us,” Schnatter said. “We are disappointed the NFL and its leadership did not resolve this.”

But Pizza Hut shot back on Wednesday arguing that Papa John’s excuse doesn’t hold water. Pizza Hut saw a 1 percent growth this quarter, higher than analysts expected. That growth, however, largely came from restaurants located outside of the U.S.

Still, other companies are not reporting any NFL-related sales issues.

Executives at chicken wing chain Buffalo Wild Wings Inc., which is not an NFL sponsor, said last week that it didn’t expect declining NFL viewership to hurt a key sales figure.
