Politico Cartoonist Mocks Hurricane Victims for Christian, Conservative Beliefs

When they go low…

Flooding in Houston

Politico cartoonist Matt Wuerker and his employer drew the ire of many on Wednesday after publishing a cartoon mocking victims of Hurricane Harvey for their belief in God and their conservative beliefs.

Washington Examiner reporter Al Weaver was one of many to capture a screenshot of the cartoon:

In the cartoon, a man stuck on his roof praises the “Angels! Sent by God!” to rescue him amid the flooding. A Coast Guard member snidely points out “Er, actually Coast Guard … sent by the government.” A pro-secession sign hangs on the roof, and a “Don’t Tread on Me” flag waves to the left.

Politico tweeted out the cartoon, then deleted its tweet, according to Weaver.

However, as of Thursday morning, the cartoon is still available on Politico‘s website.

Wuerker refused to apologize for the cartoon on Wednesday, doubling down on “anti-government types – Texas Secessionists – benefitting [sic] from the heroism of federal government rescuers.”

Wuerker has been defending his cartoon on Twitter since Wednesday morning.
