… ask any Bernie Sanders supporter, and they’ll tell you, “In terms of where the progressives live, I don’t think there’s any ‘there’ there.”
Apparently eager to turn Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) into something she is not, Politico ran a story Thursday evening claiming the California Democrat is some sort of liberal darling.
“Senator Kamala Harris, darling of progressives, says she’d support a Feinstein reelection bid ‘100 percent,’” blared the headline.
Eager to weave a storyline about a more liberal Democrat throwing a lifeline to a more moderate Democrat, Politico overlooked the fact that despite Harris’ sudden support for Sen. Bernie Sanders’ Medicare for All plan, progressives distrust Harris just as much as her colleague, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA).
After a slew of stories about Harris’ White House ambitions in 2020, the New York Times published a story in July that revealed many so-called progressives deeply distrust Harris because of her establishment ties.
And so far, at least, some of Mr. Sanders’s supporters are not sold on Ms. Harris, who at times disappointed liberals in her statewide roles with a reputation for excess caution. Others are simply wary of any politician promoted too heavily by the party establishment, especially after the campaign of Hillary Clinton, for whom Ms. Harris’s sister, Maya, worked as a top adviser.
“She’s not on our radar,” RoseAnn DeMoro, a Sanders ally and the executive director of National Nurses United and the California Nurses Association, said of Ms. Harris. “She’s one of the people the Democratic Party is putting up. In terms of where the progressives live, I don’t think there’s any ‘there’ there.”
Ironically, that same New York Times story featured Feinstein dismissing the idea of Harris as a national figure for the Democrats.
“She just got here,” Feinstein reportedly said when asked about Harris’s White House ambitions.
