According to a Politico poll, 60 percent of Americans support new guidelines that prevent citizens of six Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States.
A new POLITICO/Morning Consult poll showed that over four in 10 Democrats support President Trump’s travel ban, while 60 percent of Americans overall support the restrictions. The policy was overwhelmingly popular among Republicans.
POLITICO broke the results down by party affiliation:
Republicans overwhelmingly back the restrictions, the poll shows. Eighty-four percent of GOP voters support the ban, while only 9 percent oppose it. But the policy is also popular among independent voters: 56 percent support it, compared to 30 percent who oppose it. Democrats tilt slightly against the ban, with 41 percent supporting it, and 46 percent in opposition.
The questions in the poll, however, do not reference Trump or his executive orders, merely asking about State Department guidelines.
The results may show that opposition to the president’s policies may be motivated more by what Fareed Zakaria called “Trump derangement syndrome.” When references to Trump and the executive orders were included in an Associated Press-NORC Center poll, POLITICO pointed out, 57 percent of Americans believed that the courts were right to block the ban.
