POLL: Americans Approve of Handling of Harvey By Trump, Feds

A new Huffington Post/YouGov poll found both Trump and the federal government are earning praise for their handling of the natural disaster.

Hurricane Harvey is expected to become the most damaging natural disaster in U.S. history, but despite the cataclysmic rains and floods destroying towns along the Gulf Coast, most Americans believe the government is handling the natural disaster well.

President Trump received a plurality of support from Americans in the Huffington Post/YouGov poll conducted August 28-29. Forty-two percent of respondents said they somewhat or strongly approve of Trump’s handling of the crisis. Just 23 percent said they disapproved, and 34 percent were unsure.

The federal government, whose response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005 was widely criticized, received even higher marks. Fifty-one percent of those polled said they approved of the way the federal government is handling the flooding in Texas. A mere 15 percent said they disapproved, while one-third were not sure.

The pollsters also asked respondents if they believe climate changed had a role in the flooding in Texas. Forty-seven percent said they believe climate change played a very or somewhat important role in the flooding. Just 32 percent said they believe it played little to no role at all, and 21 percent were unsure.

The HuffPo/YouGov poll used a 1,000-person sample via web-based interviews and has a margin of error of +/- 3.8 percent.
