Voters say North Dakota Senator Heidi Heitkamp does not deserve re-election, according to a survey conducted by WPAi.
Still over a year away, the 2018 midterm elections are proving to be vexing for Democrats representing states that President Trump won in 2016. In a few states, Trump’s win margin reached double digits, compounding the issue.
Trump’s margin in North Dakota was a whopping 35 percentage points, making Sen. Heidi Heitkamp’s (D-ND) re-election campaign that much more difficult. To that end, a new poll from WPAi found 44 percent of likely North Dakota voters want a “new person” representing them in the Senate, while just 42 percent said Heitkamp deserves re-election.
Further, Republican State Treasurer Kelly Schmidt, who has not yet announced a Senate campaign, leads Heitkamp in a hypothetical matchup, 48-44:
Kelly Schmidt is a strong challenger in the race for North Dakota U.S. Senate. For thirteen years, she has served as North Dakota State Treasurer and won both of her most recent statewide elections with more than 60% of the vote. In a head-to-head match-up with Heitkamp, Kelly Schmidt leads by four points. Likely voters have also voiced their discontent with Heidi Heitkamp, and key voting groups in North Dakota are already coalescing around Schmidt as their preferred future Senator.
The poll was conducted by WPAi via live phone interviews. It has a margin of error of +/- 4.9 percent.
