The President claims that firing Comey had nothing to do with the FBI’s investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.
President Trump told a small pool of reporters that he had fired FBI Director James Comey because “he wasn’t doing a good job,” and that it had nothing to do with the FBI’s investigation of Trump’s campaign.
Trump, who was meeting with Russia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sergey Lavrov, allowed a small pool of reporters into the Oval Office to take pictures, and the reporters quickly started shouting questions at Trump regarding his decision fire Comey.
“Because he wasn’t doing a good job,” Trump responded. “Very simply, he was not doing a good job.”
Another reporter asked Trump if Comey’s firing had anything to do with the ongoing FBI investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.
“Not at all,” Trump answered.
As reporters were being escorted out of the Oval Office, another reporter asked President Trump if the new FBI director would be in charge of the investigation. Trump elected not to answer this question.
