“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy,” Trump’s statement read
President Donald Trump issued a statement following the shooting at an Alexandria, Va. baseball field where Republican members of Congress were holding a baseball practice.
“The Vice President and I are aware of the shooting incident in Virginia and are monitoring developments closely,” the statement began. “We are deeply saddened by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of Congress, their staffs, Capitol Police, first responders, and all others affected.”
Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL), who was participating in the baseball practice, called in to CNN to recount what he saw, including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) being wounded by gunfire.
The president also tweeted:
Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, a true friend and patriot, was badly injured but will fully recover. Our thoughts and prayers are with him.
