Clinton wrote a letter to Wells Fargo customers, but she left out a key connection she has to the bank…
Hillary Clinton penned an open letter to Wells Fargo customers Tuesday morning that attacked the bank’s illegal account scandal.
In the letter, Clinton said she was “deeply disturbed” by the news that Wells Fargo employees opened fake accounts and charged existing customers up to $2.4 million in unauthorized fees. The bank fired 5,300 employees, many of whom argued intense pressure to meet quotas is what drove them to break the law.
“[E]ven after Americans spent years working hard to recover from the Great Recession, the culture of misconduct and recklessness that preceded that crisis too often persists,” Clinton wrote.
Left unmentioned in Clinton’s letter, however, are the hundreds of thousands of dollars donated by Wells Fargo and its affiliates to the Clintons, both for speaking fees and to the Clinton Foundation.
The bank has given between $10,001 and $25,000 to the Clinton Foundation, while the Wells Fargo Foundation has given another $100,001 to $250,000. Bill Clinton received $200,000 for a speech he gave to Wells Fargo in 2011 as well.
As is the case with so many companies and corporations, Clinton’s interaction with Wells Fargo is fraught with politics and vast amounts of money, making her letter to customers just one piece of a complicated puzzle.
