Report: Judge Tells Menendez Lawyer to ‘Shut Up’

Cue the ‘this is fine’ memes.

According to a Politico report, the judge presiding over Sen. Bob Menendez’s (D-NJ) trial told Menendez’s lawyer to “shut up” during the the first day of the trial on Wednesday.

Menendez is facing charges related to bribery and corruption, and his trial, thus far is not going well, with his attorneys clashing with U.S. District Court Judge William Walls.

During an argument over an order that Menendez could not depart the trial in order to resume his duties as a senator, Menendez attorney Raymond Brown accused the judge of “prejudicial” behavior:

Brown said that Walls was “ speculative as to our motives.” Brown and Walls then began talking over each other.

“Shut up for a moment if you don’t mind,” Walls said. “I said what I said” to “underscore what I considered the lack of merits in this motion,” Walls added.

Walls eventually denied Brown’s arguments and requests.

Menendez is under scrutiny for his relationship with Florida ophthalmologist Salomon Melgen, and prosecutors are alleging that the senator exchanged government favors for personal perks.
